WhatsApp Contact Naming: Control How Auto-Saved Contacts Get Named
March 9, 2026 · 4 min read
When WASBOT auto-saves contacts from WhatsApp to Google Contacts, it needs to know how to name them. Should it use their WhatsApp display name? Add a suffix like "(WA)"? What about contacts with no name at all?
That's what naming configurations solve. You define the rules once, and every contact saved follows your naming convention automatically.
Why Naming Configs Matter
Without a naming config, auto-saved contacts end up messy:
- Some have WhatsApp display names like "Boss Man" or emoji-filled names
- Others have no name at all — just a phone number
- You can't tell which contacts came from WhatsApp vs. other sources
A naming configuration keeps everything clean and searchable in your Google Contacts.
How to Create a Naming Config
Step 1: Go to the Contacts Page
Navigate to Contacts in your dashboard. Under the Account Setup section on the left, you'll find Naming Configurations.
Step 2: Click "Add Config"
Click the Add Config button to open the creation modal.
Step 3: Set Your Preferences
You'll configure these fields:
- Config Name — A label for this config (e.g., "Business Contacts", "WhatsApp TV Leads"). This is for your reference only.
- Display Name Format — How the contact's name appears. Uses the WhatsApp display name by default.
- Generic Name — Fallback name for contacts with no WhatsApp display name. Example: "WhatsApp Contact" or "Lead".
- Suffix — Optional text appended to every contact name. Example: "(WA)" or "(WASBOT)".
- Set as Default — Whether this config should be the default for new sessions.
Step 4: Save
Click Save and your config is ready to assign to sessions.
Assigning Configs to Sessions
Each WhatsApp session can use a different naming config. This is useful if you run multiple numbers for different purposes:
- Go to the Session Contact Settings panel on the right side of the Contacts page
- Find the session you want to configure
- Select a naming config from the dropdown
- Contacts saved by that session will follow the selected config's rules
Example Configurations
For a WhatsApp TV operator:
- Config Name: "TV Contacts"
- Generic Name: "TV Viewer"
- Suffix: "(TV1)"
- Result: "Tunde Bakare (TV1)" or "TV Viewer (TV1)" for unnamed contacts
For a business:
- Config Name: "Business Leads"
- Generic Name: "Lead"
- Suffix: "(WA)"
- Result: "Ada Okafor (WA)" or "Lead (WA)" for unnamed contacts
For an agency managing multiple clients:
- Create separate configs: "Client A Contacts", "Client B Contacts"
- Each with different suffixes: "(ClientA)", "(ClientB)"
- Assign each config to the corresponding session
Editing and Deleting Configs
- Edit: Click the pencil icon on any config to update its name, generic name, or suffix
- Delete: Click the trash icon to remove a config. Sessions using it will need a new config assigned.
- Set Default: Mark a config as default so new sessions automatically use it
How It Works with Auto-Save
The naming config kicks in whenever WASBOT saves a contact:
- New message arrives from an unsaved number
- WASBOT checks if auto-save is enabled for that session
- WASBOT looks up the session's assigned naming config
- Contact is saved with the configured name format + suffix
- If the contact has no WhatsApp display name, the generic name is used instead
The same config applies to bulk-save operations — when you scan and save unsaved contacts in bulk, they all follow the assigned naming rules.
Requirements
- Naming configs are available on all paid plans
- A Google account must be linked to save contacts
- Auto-save must be enabled on the session for automatic saving
Getting Started
Go to Contacts → Naming Configurations → Add Config. Create your first config, assign it to a session, and enable auto-save. Every new contact will be saved with your naming rules.
